Half Ice, Half Fire: A Bizarre New State of Matter That Could Reshape Physics

-

In a groundbreaking study, scientists at Brookhaven National Lab uncovered a new phase of matter dubbed “half ice, half fire” a bizarre mix of cold, orderly electron spins and hot, chaotic ones. This discovery flips the script on previously accepted limits in physics and could spark advances in quantum computing , magnetic refrigeration, and more. It stems from a decade-long journey through strange magnetic materials and offers a brand-new way to manipulate matter with ultrasharp precision. A New State of Matter Emerges Two physicists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory have discovered a new phase of matter while exploring a model of a magnetic material . This newly identified phase is a unique arrangement of electron spins, the tiny magnetic moments of electrons that point either “up” or “down.” The phase features a mix of highly ordered (“cold”) and highly disordered (“hot”) spins. Because of this unusual combination, the researchers named it “half ice,...

Quantum Tunneling Breakthrough: Technion Scientists Move Atoms With Precision

In a groundbreaking experiment at the Technion Faculty of Physics , researchers demonstrated the transfer of atoms via quantum tunneling using optical tweezers. This novel method, which strategically avoids trapping atoms in the middle tweezer, represents a notable stride toward innovative quantum technologies. Quantum Tunneling in Optical Tweezers A new experiment at the Technion Faculty of Physics demonstrates how atoms can be transferred between locations using quantum tunneling with optical tweezers. Led by Prof. Yoav Sagi and doctoral student Yanay Florshaim from the Solid State Institute, this research was published recently in Science Advances. The experiment relies on optical tweezers , a powerful tool that uses focused laser beams to trap and manipulate tiny particles like atoms, molecules, and even living cells. Here’s how it works: when light interacts with matter, it creates a force proportional to the light’s intensity. This force, though too weak to impact larger objects,...

Andromeda galaxy may not collide with the Milky Way after all

Since 1912, we’ve known that the Andromeda galaxy is racing towards our own Milky Way at about 110 kilometres per second. A century later, in 2012, astrophysicists at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Maryland, US came to a striking conclusion. In four billion years, they predicted, a collision between the two galaxies was a sure thing. Now, it’s not looking so sure. Using the latest data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia astrometric mission , astrophysicists led by Till Sawala of the University of Helsinki, Finland re-modelled the impending crash, and found that it’s 50/50 as to whether a collision happens or not. This new result differs from the 2012 one because it considers the gravitational effect of an additional galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), alongside the Milky Way, Andromeda and the nearby Triangulum spiral galaxy, M33. While M33’s gravity, in effect, adds to Andromeda’s motion towards us, Sawala and colleagues found that the LMC’s gravity tends t...
